Can you name 5 women artists?

There are so many artists out there but who gets the most credit...Men. If someone thinks about a famous artist they are most likely going to name Pablo Picasso, Van Gogh, Da Vinci, Michelangelo. People aren't going to say Frida Kahlo, Mary Cassat, Morisot this happens because women don't get as much credit for art as men do. Just like how women are usually considered less valuable to men. Men get better pay than women, get more fame even if women did it first the double standard for men is extremely high. For instance, if a man takes off his shirt to pose for a picture its attractive and everybody loves it if a women poses in her swim suit its disgusting and she's trying too hard or being a slut. Women don't get enough credit for their contribution to art and there are tons of artists who are in the darkness and not getting recognized for their work.

The first artist who should be recognized for her awesome work is Georgia O'Keeffe. She was born in 1887 and died

in 1986. She was also married to a famous artist Alfred Stieglitz. She is known for her paintings with huge flowers, New York skyscrapers, and New Mexico landscapes where she later moved onto to live. She is called the "mother of modernism". Many men would say she is the best woman painter but she thinks of herself as one of the best painters. Georgia doesn't have a division line that separates her from the male artists. She attended the art institute of Chicago for a year in (1905-1906) then another year at art students league in New York, in 1912 four years later her artistic practice changed dramatically when she started studying ideas of Arthur Wesley Dow. Dow emphasized composition and design. O'Keeffe practiced the technique for two years. Three years later (1915) she became the 1st American artist to practice pure abstraction. She had a series of abstract charcoal drawings. Later in her life she dressed in all black and white costumes for simplicity and elegance despite her husband having nude photos of her on display. Her big comeback came from the exhibition at the Whitney Museum. The Brooklyn Museum has 4 of her works of art.

The next artist is Mary Cassatt; Mary was born in 1844 and died in 1926. She was born in Pennsylvania but lived much of her adult life in France. Cassatt was a female impressionist artist. She started learning art at a school in Philly at the age of 15 even though her parents did not want her to become a professional artist. Her father was a stockbroker and her mom came from a banking family. Her dad would pay for her basic necessities but wouldn't pay for her art supplies. One of the things I find smart and interesting about Cassatt is that she didn't get married. She saw how other female artists had to choose between taking care of a family or being an artist and she didn't want to have to choose. When she moved to France she studied and met with a lot of great artists who later became her mentor. Degas was a huge part of her life and teaching her about art. He taught her how to etch, how to do pastel paintings and engraving.Several of her works were put in the salon but she did have tons of low points in her career. For example, when her sister passed from an illness she had to stop working, when she was pushed back by the jury then the next year they bought it when she had slightly darkened the background.

Vanessa Bell is an English painter that was born in 1879 in London and died in 1961. She was married, had three children and also had three siblings. Bell and her husband had several affairs throughout her marriage. She even had a child with one of her other men but Clive her husband loved the girl as if it was his very own daughter. She took drawing lessons in 1896 Ebenezer, and studied painting in 1901. Vanessa tried to copy the post- impressionists' style by using bright colors and bold forms then later she switched to abstraction. When Bell accepted herself as an artist she created a group called the Friday club. Her works of art are based off her personal life. Bell's first solo exhibition took place in London. Some of her exhibitions has to do with nudity, others are oil paintings. Even though her work went out of style she still continued to paint.

Yoko Ono is one of my favorite artists. I love how she is a performance artist and lets her audience go to the extremes. In one of her performances she was dressed in all black and had a table with different objects so they could use anything they wanted and use it on her. For example, most of the men were the ones trying to expose her, but women would try and stop them from exposing her. Yoko Ono was born in 1969 and died in 1980. Ono was married to a legend named John Lennon. Yoko was an artist, singer, songwriter and a peace activist. In another one of her performances she was in bed with John and people could come to this hotel and ask them about their feelings on peace and discuss peace. She also did conceptual art Yoko made a book Grapefruit the work is a book where the reader either does the directions literally or in their imagination.

Lastly, is the feminist artist Judy Chicago who was born in Chicago in the year of 1939 and is still living. In the Brooklyn Museum she made the dinner party. Which is one of the first things you see when you enter. This artwork is a huge triangular setup of a dinner table with 39 place settings, each for an important women in history. 999 other women names are inscribed onto the floor in front of the table. The table has a runner, gold chalices, utensils, and china painted porcelain plates.
