Marguerite Gérard - Minipost

Born in Grasse, France, Marguerite Gérard lived a very plain life in her early childhood. At age 8, she became the sister-in-law of  the well-known Rococo painter, Jean-Honoré Fragonard. At age 14, she moved in with her sister's new family. Marguerite was intrigued by her new brother-in-law's work and became his unofficial apprentice.
Marguerite was known for her "...accurate details rendered with subtly blended brush strokes". Not only did she create art for the wealthy, but she created art for the common people which helped increase her reputation. Marguerite focused on the beauty of domestic life. Many of her art works are themed around motherhood and self-love. Although she never joined any academy or organization, she won three medals for her work. Powerful French figures such as Napoleon and King Louis XVII acquired her art as well.
