Augusta Savage was an African American sculptor and teacher. She was born in Florida in 1892 and died in New York in 1962 at the age of 70. Mrs.Augusta worked for equal rights for the African American community in the arts. Her work was connected to the Harlem Renaissance she has 8 works of art. One of her famous works is the Harp she made the musical instrument but instead of strings she sculpted people, 12 singers and the singing board was formed by the hand of god, the man in the front kneeling is holding music and he is the foot pedal on the harp. Mrs.Savage applied for a summer art program that she was overqualified for; she didn't get the spot because she was black. After this happened to her she started public fights for equal rights because the committee's decision troubled her. Savage's sculptures got attention after the public fights, her bust of W.E.B Du Bois got commission when it was put in the Harlem Library. One of the things people liked about her art was that it didn't portray black people as animals or degrade them.
