Judy Chicago

Judy Chicago, born July 20th, 1939, is an American feminist artist, author, and educator whose work has been exhibited throughout America, Canada, Europe, Asia, and other places as well. In the early 1970’s Ms. Chicago aided in the development and progression of a unique arts program for women at California State University, Fresno. In an effort to bring attention to women’s history, Ms. Chicago created her most well known piece, The Dinner Party, which was made between 1974 and 1979 with the help of hundreds of volunteers.

The Dinner Party was created in order to draw attention to the history of women and their work in the western civilization. Following The Dinner Party, Judy created Birth Project and then PowerPlay during the 1980’s. PowerPlay was created in order to address the artist’s continuous struggle with power as well as powerlessness in a male dominant field and society. This piece “brought a critical feminist gaze to the gender construct of masculinity, exploring how prevailing definitions of power have affected the world in general -- and men in particular.” Her work continued to captivate many by bringing attention to things that otherwise weren’t actively discussed. Alongside making art work, Judy Chicago is the author of several books, one of them being Through the Flower: My Struggle as a Woman Artist, published in 1975. Chicago is a women’s dedicated to speaking and teaching about a woman’s struggle in a male driven society. For over five full decades, Ms. Chicago has devoted time and effort into making sure women have access to the highest level of art production.
