Welcome!

Art and Women students,

It will be a fast-paced, lots-of-reading-in-record-time kind of semester. I will make it as engaging and motivating as I can. It is up to all of you to do your part and make it awesome too! DO THE READING!

I look forward to spending the next semester engaged in great discussions, impressed with your projects and getting to know all of you. Welcome!

Invite to join me (and my boys) for a visit to STORM KING ART CENTER once spring classes are over on Wednesday June 15th at 1pm (rescheduled from June 8). SEMESTER PROJECTS!

-Presentations of your project will be 2 minutes maximum.

-The presentation of your project should be a "pitch" or short description of what you have made and should be clear, inspiring and high energy. Imagine you are trying to have a group decide to fund your project for further development.

-Everyone will present from the blog post your create for your project or linked directly from the post PLEASE TEST THIS BEFORE ARRIVING IN CLASS

-You must create a post on the blog about your project. This post will be part of your project grade. The post must include a link to your project (including pdf projects) and you must list your bibliography/resources in your post.

-Print projects such as paper zines, essays and pamphlets or must be handed in to me in class in addition to preparing the above for the presentations. All projects MUST be published and distributed to an audience (outside of the class) before presenting in class.

*on 4/18 and 4/26 please arrive in class by 2:25. We will begin class and take attendance at 2:30pm. I will not adjust attendance after 2:30pm.

TRIP TO THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM Friday April 1

We will be meeting in the lobby of the Brooklyn Museum at 10:30am

+We will be meeting in the main entrance lobby of the museum in the large glassed area just inside the front door. (NOT near the ticket desk).

Updated Proposal Post on the class blog due before 4/5

Please post a short description of where you are with your semester project. Be sure to explain the medium and exact output of your research. Your project is NOT a presentation, but instead you will present the project to the class in a very short 3 minute presentation. This will be like a pitch where you introduce and "Sell" your project to the class. The project should be published or distributed to an audience before your presentation in class during final presentations.

In your update post please list resources from your research on your topic. These include: inspiration (examples similar to what you would like to create) and the resources you have already that are informing your project.

Please be sure to address: Why are YOU making this project?Who is your audience? What is your message? How does this fit into your professional aspirations? How does this fit into your portfolio?

Be specific, focus your message on a clear point, use your research to help flush out your ideas and where you are in your production at this point. Remember all projects must be completed and posted to this blog by

*if you visit the museum on your own you must create a post on the class blog called BROOKLYN MUSEUM VISIT and post photos and descriptions of the exhibitions you visited in the Sackler Center especially the Dinner Party. If you do this post you are entitled to receive extra credit for Post 3.

Can you name 5 women artists?

Concentrating on the artists and exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum, choose 5 women artists (they do not all need to be in the exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum but must include several from the galleries or be inspired by the exhibitions there - research their site or go visit) to illustrate and briefly explain various themes we have discussed throughout the course about gender, race, class and art history.

You can organize your post into genres, 'isms, political or societal messages, aesthetics, techniques or personal narratives. You must choose a clear thesis and the 5 artists carefully. Your post should include artists working today as well. Be sure to illustrate your post with various images (and/or videos) and to cite your research. Please reference the Brooklyn Museum and the exhibitions of the Sackler Center extensively.

Feel free to include or tie in the topic of your final assignment if appropriate. You can use this opportunity to dive into that research for this post if you can find overlap.

What is modernism? How did women artists in Europe influence the techniques and development of modernism and the movements of abstraction, german expressionism, dada and surrealism? What important circumstances aided these and how were women integral in applying the techniques of design and craft in these new approaches to art? Please include examples of each and the specifics of these new approaches to art and art-making of the 20C.

~800 words. Include citations of the class readings in your post (Chadwick and Guerrilla Girls). Please be sure to include at least five images (examples) and two links. See checklist below for other issues to consider and include in your post.

Proposal Due for Semester Project

~One page - printed and handed in - explaining the topic you have chosen to focus on and research, the medium you hope to explore in creating your project (research paper, essay, video, art project etc.) See the project description on the syllabus for more details and to help formulate and design your project. This is a very self-designed assignment. Please use this opportunity to plan a project that focuses on your talents, your strengths and as an opportunity to learn and explore something of your choosing.

Please be as specific as possible. Also include some RESEARCH you have done or are planning, inspirational examples you are looking to as models and other resources you plan to use. Remember that this should be a portfolio piece for you. Be thoughtful in designing how this project might best fit into your professional ambitions.

Groups 4 and 5 present

**ALL GROUP PRESENTATIONS must also have a summary posted to the blog. Please explain the presentation in a paragraph or two and link or embed images from or the presentation itself. One post per group. It is best to complete this before your presentation in class. For those who have presented please do this immediately. This post is part of your presentation grade.

Choose a possible topic for your semester project. Type up a sentence or two with the idea you would like to pursue. You will hand this in at the beginning of class. Your topic can focus on an artist, a genre, a style, a social issue addressed by an artist/artists, a collective of artists, artists as activists, a particular theme throughout several artists' work, a specific artwork analyzed, etc. We will discuss these ideas in class.

Please answer the following questions based on the readings and class discussion. Use your own experiences and realizations to help illustrate your understanding of the material. You must cite from the readings in order to explain and analyze the arguments made in the readings.

What is the male gaze (as described by John Berger) and why is it pervasive in art and in popular culture? Give illustrative examples. What is patriarchy (as described by bell hooks)? Give examples. How have you come to understand these structures and in what ways has this understanding changed your views about various art and media examples and of your own identity and role in these structures?

~800 words. Include citations of the readings in your post. Please be sure to include at least two images and two links. Watch the videos (from class) to help your analysis.
