Tayeba Begum Lipi- Mini Blog

Toys Watching Toys, 2002, cast fiberglass, textile, wood and fabric, dimensions variable. Installation view at Alliance Française, 2002.

Tayeba Begum Lipi, now age 47, is a well known Bangladeshi  female Muslim artist. Her work is influenced on the tragedy that took place on September 11th, as well as  being forced into gender roles too young, sacrificing futures and aspirations for the sake of family honor. In the picture above, she is illustrating two identities of herself, because she believes people should not be stuck with one. One is a religious identity that many females look to when they are unsure of who they are or want to be. She is one of Bangladesh's most active artists. From a large family in rural northern Bangladesh, Lipi has an early memory of secretly witnessing her sister-in-law giving birth at home under the care of a midwife, who cut the umbilical cord with a razor blade sterilized in boiling water. In 2012, she created  her razor-blade sculpture of a modest bed frame, calling it the " Love Bed", which was acquired by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. It was sought to express the lure and attraction to the beauty of it, yet create pain or even death on a bride. This focus on the injustice that takes place in the South Asian marriages and life itself is expressed in her artwork.
