Petra Collins: Critical Artist Expression

Petra Collins is a 23-year old photographer, artist, and designer from Vancouver, Canada. As a teenager, Collins immersed herself in the world of photography by becoming a casting director for Richard Kern. By the time she graduated high school, she had gained notoriety for her own film photography, which predominantly features young teenage girls in their natural state. Her work enlightens viewers with an unfiltered perspective into female sexuality and teenage girl culture.

In addition to her own personal work, Collins has quickly become a leading name in the fashion world for her photography. She has shot for countless campaigns and magazines, including Vogue, Elle, Nylon, Dazed, and others. In 2013, Collins collaborated with American Apparel to produce a pair of graphic t-shirts that stirred up much controversy.

The one which caused the most ruckus featured a drawing of a girl masturbating during menstruation. When asked about the t-shirt, Collins said she had grown tired of girls being censored in many facets of sexuality: masturbation and menstruation amongst them. This is a shining example of Petra Collins' feminist expression. She is incredibly young and has a bright career ahead of her.
