Sara Kittaneh-Mini Blog

Photo by: Nicholas Weissman of Palestinian artist, Laila Ajjawi, and her graffiti.

Laila Ajjawi, a 25 year old Palestinian artist who was born and raised in a refugee camp in Irbid, Jordan addresses cultural, social, and political issues through her art.  Laila uses art as an escape and hopes her art is reflected from walls to people. Her paintings usually symbolize frustration of her family situation of having to fight for such basic things, living as refugees.  She uses art as a way to show the outside world that Arab women are not oppressed and can still represent themselves in a male dominated society.  Through her murals and activism, she hopes to show other Palestinian refugees, especially women, that they can take control of their destinies through education and art instead of being subordinate to men by following cultural expectations.

More of Laila's art can be found on her Twitter and Facebook:
