Vanessa German, age 39 and one of her young students |
Vanessa German used to sit on the porch of her house and make sculptures as kids would walk by seeing her covered in paint. From then on out as kids asked her to help she would give them brushes and tell them to make their own art. German says it gives her a "sense of deep rightness" when she's making art and decided to allow the kids of her neighborhood to feel the same. She lead the housewarming for Homewood's new Art House (displayed below) where the kids had a place in the neighborhood to not only become artist but also be safe from the streets.
Home transformed by Vanessa German and her aspiring young artists in the neighborhood of (Homewood) Pittsburgh. |
She didn't always have this beautiful Art House you know? After a while, there were too many kids to fit on the porch of her own home so a neighbor lent her a house for a couple of years until they moved into this one. German's art became even more popular over the years as she solos shows around the country, has award winning sculptures, and was able to use her earnings from that to invest in buying this house. She not only gives back to the community but she's providing hope and safety for these children.
German addresses the social issue of violence and protecting our youth from guns and bad neighborhood conditions. This house is a place for the students to not be a product of their environment and have a hopeful future at being successful in not only artistry but anything they'd like to pursue.
