Mariella Ligon- Mini Blog

One artist whose work I believe critically addresses a cultural and social issue is a woman named Nalini Malani. Born in 1946, Nalini is a contemporary Indian artist whose work is influenced by her experiences as a refugee of the partition of India. Not only are her drawings and paintings expressed through the use of paper and paint, but they are also extended into forms of projected animation, video and film. She uses animation to make her paintings and art work come to life. Nalini focuses on issues of race as she touches on Indian history of violence and oppression throughout her work. Many of her art work focuses on conflict influenced by real world issues as well. She also puts her attention to feminist issues such as women's social experiences of vulnerability and oppression.
