Matthew Acosta: Critical Artist Expression

Shamsia Hassani - Dream of Graffiti - Darulaman Palace

Afghan graffiti artist Shamsia Hassani was born in 1988, Teheran, Iran. Facing many obstacles in Iran, Hassani migrated to Afghanistan where she pursued an education in fine arts at Kabul University. Now a lecturer at Faculty of Fine Arts, Kabul University, the contemporary artist is known for her Kabul Street Art and Digital Graffiti. Addressing cultural, social, and political issues in her graffiti, Hassani often paints silhouettes of women in burqas with closed eyes accompanied by other figures that range from animals to musical instruments. Her goal is to inspire traditionally oppressed women to talk about their lives and open their minds. She also uses her art to help bring positive changes to wash away the depressing memories of the war that had taken place in her country.
