Semester Project: Kara Walker

My semester project will be on Kara Walker. Walker is known for creating silhouettes topics such as gender, race, slavery, and sexuality. Often times, her work is meant to make viewers uncomfortable by placing the silhouette figures in "odd" positions. I will most likely be doing an essay paper that analyzes a few of Walker's pieces and comparing it with problems Society has today. Here are some possible examples:

At the moment, I am still deciding on what sources to use. Sources I am looking at currently are:

As for the 3 minute presentation, I am thinking of have a printout for everyone with a summary of Kara Walker along with some of her work. Hopefully I can talk about the pieces and give my opinion/critique on them.

I love yor project because I find silhouettes fascinating in the way where art is brought to life and how its also used as way of entertainment in some cases.

This sounds really interesting. I like that you're drifting away from traditional "art" (paintings, photographs) and focusing on silhouettes.

Im excited for your project because it is a lot different from the rest. My only concern is how you are going to get your ideas published and put out there for people outside of our class because you didnt mention it here.

SEMESTER PROJECTS!

-Presentations of your project will be 2 minutes maximum.

-The presentation of your project should be a "pitch" or short description of what you have made and should be clear, inspiring and high energy. Imagine you are trying to have a group decide to fund your project for further development.

-Everyone will present from the blog post your create for your project or linked directly from the post PLEASE TEST THIS BEFORE ARRIVING IN CLASS

-You must create a post on the blog about your project. This post will be part of your project grade. The post must include a link to your project (including pdf projects) and you must list your bibliography/resources in your post.

-Print projects such as paper zines, essays and pamphlets or must be handed in to me in class in addition to preparing the above for the presentations. All projects MUST be published and distributed to an audience (outside of the class) before presenting in class.

*on 4/18 and 4/26 please arrive in class by 2:25. We will begin class and take attendance at 2:30pm. I will not adjust attendance after 2:30pm.

Updated Proposal Post on the class blog due before 4/5

Please post a short description of where you are with your semester project. Be sure to explain the medium and exact output of your research. Your project is NOT a presentation, but instead you will present the project to the class in a very short 3 minute presentation. This will be like a pitch where you introduce and "Sell" your project to the class. The project should be published or distributed to an audience before your presentation in class during final presentations.

In your update post please list resources from your research on your topic. These include: inspiration (examples similar to what you would like to create) and the resources you have already that are informing your project.

Please be sure to address: Why are YOU making this project?Who is your audience? What is your message? How does this fit into your professional aspirations? How does this fit into your portfolio?

Can you name 5 women artists?

Concentrating on the artists and exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum, choose 5 women artists (they do not all need to be in the exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum but must include several from the galleries or be inspired by the exhibitions there - research their site or go visit) to illustrate and briefly explain various themes we have discussed throughout the course about gender, race, class and art history.

You can organize your post into genres, 'isms, political or societal messages, aesthetics, techniques or personal narratives. You must choose a clear thesis and the 5 artists carefully. Your post should include artists working today as well. Be sure to illustrate your post with various images (and/or videos) and to cite your research. Please reference the Brooklyn Museum and the exhibitions of the Sackler Center extensively.

Feel free to include or tie in the topic of your final assignment if appropriate. You can use this opportunity to dive into that research for this post if you can find overlap.

What is modernism? How did women artists in Europe influence the techniques and development of modernism and the movements of abstraction, german expressionism, dada and surrealism? What important circumstances aided these and how were women integral in applying the techniques of design and craft in these new approaches to art? Please include examples of each and the specifics of these new approaches to art and art-making of the 20C.

~800 words. Include citations of the class readings in your post (Chadwick and Guerrilla Girls). Please be sure to include at least five images (examples) and two links. See checklist below for other issues to consider and include in your post.

What is the male gaze (as described by John Berger) and why is it pervasive in art and in popular culture? Give illustrative examples. What is patriarchy (as described by bell hooks)? Give examples.
