Our group will be presenting feminist and performance artists. We opened our presentation with feminist performance artist Ana Mendieta. She is known for her earth - body artwork and her connection with earth physically and spiritually.
The second artist in our presentation is Barbara Kruger. Kruger was born in Newark, New Jersey and is known for her photographs with black, red, and white bold text accompanying it which catches the viewer's attention. Kruger critiques cultural, gender, and societal issues in her work.
Marina Abramović is a performance artist whose performances entailed placing herself in danger in order to push her own physical and mental limits. She arrives at the notion that our bodies are limitless because of the power of our mind. Abramović lessens the distance between artist and audience so much so that the audience becomes an integral part of the performance.
Yoko Ono is another performance artist; although she is known mostly as being John Lennon's widow, she is a highly under appreciated artist. Her early performance, "Happenings", explored female objectification, peace, activism, and personal attachment to material things. Over time, she pushed the boundaries of what art could be, because she believes art can be found in everyday life.
Carolee Schneemann is a multidisciplinary artist who is known for her discourses on the body, gender, and sexuality. The history of her work is characterized by research into the body of the artist, among other things.
