This topic looks good. Here, I can help you by giving you the main points of Frida Kahlo:
Frida Kahlo was born in Coayacan Mexico City in 1907. Born to a German and Jewish father and an indigenous mother of Spanish descent. She embraced her mestizo culture. She wore Mexican clothing and jewelry. She was well known for the unibrow and moustache which made her proud. Frida would push the envelope and also dress in men’s clothing.
At age 6, Frida suffered from polio. This was the beginning of many years of illness. At the age of 18, she was a victim of a horrible bus accident. She suffered a crippling injury that would stay with her for her entire lifetime. A pole pierced her pelvis and exited through her vagina. The accident led to many years of hospitalizations and thirty five surgeries. She suffered in pain for the rest of her life.
After many surgeries, Frida became ill and bedridden. While in bed, her parents installed an easel and gave her paint brushes. This is when Frida became an avid painter. A self portrait painter that poured her heart and pain onto the canvas. Suffrage fueled her paintings. Paintings that depicted her most inner self, dreams and nightmares
In 1929, she married Diego Rivera, a great muralist. Their tumultuous marriage led to many infidelities. Diego and Frida couldn’t be faithful to each other. Frida rebelled and had many affairs with males and females. Her love for Diego was an obsession and her worst nightmare.
Frida fought the good battle. She fought against patriarchy, her freedom to be herself and one of the boys. She drank, cursed and slept with woman, proving her willingness to live her life, as a powerful woman who broke the barriers of patriarchy.
I like your topic and what you are doing. If you talk about patriarchy you can also use Bell Hooks piece, "Understanding Patriarchy".
