Medika Edwards

Updated proposal

Topic: Comparing the work of Laura Mulvey and Linda Nochlin and how they view the female artist.

I chose these two women because they have shown strong views on the issues and the plights of women artist.  They are coming from different areas of the artistic trade however they the same concern about the works of female.
I will use their writings and the history of their life and work to tie in with other women who fought for the rights of women. I will also use Susan B. Anthony and Sojourner Truth to bring light to the struggles of women and the ways and means they use to overcome these disparities.
As a social work major I feel it is important to highlight the struggles of women as this is part of our platform to bring equality to all groups. Women has been marginalize from the beginning of time and it is rewarding to know that the struggle is not only in social work but also in the art world.
I will use article such as Why Have There Been No Great Women Artist? by Linda Nochlin, Feminist Cinema and Visual Pain review by John Haber of Laura Mulvey: Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema, Film theory by Mulvey, articles on Susan B. Anthony and article on Sojourner Truth.

  1. This is very good and interesting! I like that in your project you will show that struggle women artists undergo in order for their art to be recognized.

  2. Your project is interesting. Think about how the artist you have chosen make an impact on today's patriarchal society. Perhaps, you can use videos or portraits to exemplify how the contributions woman from years ago have made a significant impact and how it has affected the women of today.

  3. I really like that your project by comparing Mulvey and Nochlin's perspective may lead to how culture and religion affect women from early childhood to adulthood. Perhaps you can analyze cultural differences which continue to perpetuate women's role as the subordinate to the male dominant role.
