Semester
Project
In
India, Goddesses are portrayed as a divine power, and men are taught
to treat women as if they were a goddess, that is, with respect.
However, this contradicts how women are actually treated, in regards
to unequal pay and employment, domestic abuse, cat calling, marital
rape, rape, female feticide, and basic human respect. I have made the playlist, “Oh Patriarchy, It's Time For You To Leave India”, which is a collection of
various videos made in order to raise awareness of the dominance of
the patriarchal system in India, and the issues it leads into, such
as cat calling and marital rape. My aim is to acknowledge the artists
who have made these videos and thank them for their effort, and to
further spread their message across the world. The videos use
sarcasm, humor, dramatization, and actual footage in order to portray
their respective views, and highlight the challenges faced by women
in a patriarchal society.
The
topic of unfair treatment of women that I am exploring has been and
currently is a major issue in India, and no doubt will continue to be
one. I believe this is highly encouraged by the patriarchal system of
India, and will only change when there is better awareness across the
globe, and when people shift their thinking away from a patriarchal
one.
My
audience for this project is the Indian population, who I aim to
educate about their contradictory behavior, and the rest of the
world, who I aim to give a glimpse of what truly is happening in
India, with respect to the way women are treated.
This
does not fit into my professional aspirations, rather my personal
aspirations, as I aim to make my home country a safer and equal place
for my sister, for my mother, for all women.
