Modernism began at the start of the 20th century. The western world was experiencing an era of rebellion against political, social, and moral codes.Women gained the right to vote and this gave them empowerment to embrace their art. The volume of women flocking art schools also increased; this opportunity gave them tools to improve their skills. Development of technology created a platform for artist to utilize new techniques.

Female artists challenged the male views of the female body. Paula Modersohn- Becker, German painter presented the woman as a tender bearer of life indicating that she is more than a sex symbol.
